I have tons of magazines and coupon books in front of me and I can’t believe how much money business owners spend hoping to get more clients. But before we bust this myth let’s look at the history of advertisement and marketing. I have discovered that the first trace of advertising goes back to 5000 BCE. Advertising was found in India as a work of art four thousand years ago. (Wiki)Egyptians used papyrus paper for advertisements. This was the beginning of the Marketing Era.
In 1836, French newspaper La Presse started selling space in the newspaper for advertisement allowing it to lower its price, extend its readership and increase its profitability. Then the whole idea was copied by other newspapers and agencies. The Tobacco industry created a new way of marketing using positive associations with cigarettes.
When the twentieth century progressed radio and TV became the new marketing mediums. First it was radio in the fifties, and then the television took over in the 80s and 90s. Then twenty first century came with search engines like Google. Google brought great opportunity for companies to be visible online.
Now let’s go back and look at investing in printing sources. If you want to be on the first page in your local magazine, it will cost you about $2,500. Small ads in the same magazine will run about $200-$600. Local coupon books charge around $650 for a little page with a free give away.
Since for long time small businesses have been doing the same passive marketing over, over and over, so at a certain point it has become a widely accepted but false practice – The Myth. Let’s look at the outcome. I have tried to market my business in beautiful glossy magazines and radio. I spent a nice chunk of money with no prospective clients or sales.
With new era of social media people want to be involved in a dialog. You have to establish real relationships with your clients. Remember that people buy from whom they know, like and trust. Also they have to believe you. Facebook changed the whole meaning of marketing by creating social interactions. Google went further. It became a social platform. Google became bigger than just the search engine. It owns YouTube; it has Google+ the social platform that combines Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn capabilities. Also it has wonderful feature called Google Hangouts.
If you want your message to get across to the world and you don’t have a huge budget use power of Google for marketing. Also, it is FREE thanks to the courtesy of Google.
