(Newswire.Net — April 27, 2013) Los Angeles, CA — A quote from about the video from YouTube states “This video presents key findings from ‘The Mobile Movement: Understanding Smartphone Consumers,’ a study from Google and conducted by Ipsos OTX, an independent market research firm. The findings come from research conducted at the end of 2010 among 5,013 US adult smart phone Internet users. Google commissioned this research with the objectives to better understand how smart phones are used in consumers’ daily lives and how smart phones have influenced the ways consumers search, shop and respond to mobile advertising.”
First, anybody reading the above quote should ask themselves, how can research from a study in 2010 be relevant to real time information in 2013 as the internet changes more frequently and faster than a top fashion model showing off the season’s newest styles? And second, why did they only use a population of 5,013 adult smart phone users? More than half the world’s population own smart phones, from a Wall Street CEO to a Goat Farmer someplace in Africa. From viewing the video, one can only assume that the percentages used in reference to how people actually interact with their smart phone are from 2012 as the only reference to a date is when the narrator says “over the past year”.
Believe it or not, there are people in the Unites States that do not know what a smart phone is. The definition per Wikipedia is “A smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced computing capability connectivity than a feature phone. The first smartphones combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA) with a mobile phone. Later models added the functionality of portable media players, low-end compact digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units to form one multi-use device. Many modern smartphones also include high-resolution touchscreens and web browsers that display standard web pages as well as mobile-optimized sites. High-speed data access is provided by Wi-Fi and mobile broadband. In recent years, the rapid developments of mobile app markets and of mobile commerce have been drivers of smartphone adoption.”
So back to the question, “Is Google Saying Not Having a Smart Phone Is Dumb?” The answer is a resounding yes. Consumers are being able to find deals while out and about via their phone from where to eat to saving money on services and products. And on the other side, small business and big business alike are able to draw existing and new customers to engage in selling more whether it be online or offline goods.
