Lauren Hooker (Musical Legends: Founder/Artistic Director/Performer), is known throughout the NY/NJ metropolitan area as a storyteller, educator, acclaimed music events producer as well as a jazz vocalist, songwriter, lyricist and pianist. Her interest in world music and multi cultural curriculum began at Bank Street School for Children in Manhattan, while on staff as a Middle School music teacher. This led to the development of “Musical Legends” her innovative and well received interactive educational programs for children.

This very special show celebrating WBGO’s 20th Anniversary “KIDS JAZZ CONCERT SERIES”  is FREE! Adults MUST be accompanied by a child! There will be small gifts, a chance to win a door prize and a Q & A session with the artists. Tickets are handed out in the lobby of each venue on the day of the performance only. First come, first served, so get there early. This is a concert series, and all concerts are wheelchair accessible. Sign language interpretation of performances, by request.

“Musical Legends” brings to life legends and musical genres from around the world by integrating all of the arts and inviting the entire audience to participate. One of the longest running Arts In Education companies on the east coast, Ms. Hooker is proud to say, “We are honored and privledged to be performing our unique, interactive, educational programs for children of all ages throughout the tri state area for almost 20 years!”

On Sunday April 28, 2013 at The Tenafly Public Library Tenafly NJ at 2pm, “Musical Legends” will take the stage and present a fun, entertaining, jazzy and educational afternoon. There will be 2 shows starting at 2 pm. Together with world renowned musicians, Allen Farnham (piano), Bill Mooring (bass) and Vince Ector (drums), Ms Hooker and the ensemble will take the audience through the origins of jazz, beginning the journey with a participatory African “Call and Response” song, then Slave Songs and Spirituals, moving into a “12 Bar Blues” and then a “Swing” tune. After that, comes a trip to the islands, with a “Calypso Song” demonstrating how Jazz influences music around the world.

America’s original art form is further explored as the show progresses with songs from a few of the originators of Jazz. Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and Sonny Rollins are highlighted composers in this segment. “Jazz Etiquette” and “Trading Fours” are two very popular elements of this part of the program. Here the audience is encouraged to “become the voice” of the musical instruments and experience first hand the freedom and challenge of improvisational scat singing.

Lauren Hooker and her “Musical Legends” program have been entertaining and educating audiences about America’s original art form “Jazz”, since 1993 in countless schools, libraries, museums and festivals including, The Newark Museum, Brooklyn’s Children Museum, The Morris Museum, Liberty Science Center, The Brooklyn Public Library’s Dweck Center, and many more. “

(Jazz 4 Kids”) was perfectly suitable for all ages. Very Family Friendly. It was obvious the performers love what they are doing and that love comes across to the audience. You can’t help but be swept away by the performers enthusiasm. Very skilled musicians, a nice intro to jazz”   Paul Volpe, Childre’s Librarian, Newark Public Library, NJ

It’s fun! It’s educational! It’s exciting! It’s not to be missed!
