(Newswire.net — July 21, 2017) Orlando, FL — Athletes are believed to have higher nutritional needs, and this is due to the intense physical activities they regularly engage in. Minerals such as magnesium have been thought to be essential in the daily diet of athletes.
Magnesium is considered to be a key mineral for athletic health and performance. According to research, even a small deficiency in magnesium could negatively affect athletic performance.
Most athletes know how important zinc, iron, chromium, and calcium are. However, some may not fully comprehend the significance of magnesium and its potential effects on health. The importance of magnesium is not just widely overlooked by athletes, but also the general population.
It is important to remember that magnesium plays an essential role for energy production as well as in the maintenance of health and performance. In Western countries, it has been found that dietary intakes of magnesium have significantly declined.
Magnesium is second to potassium as the most abundant minerals in human cells. This mineral can be found in whole grain cereals, whole-meal bread, seeds, nuts, and green leafy vegetables.
According to some experts, this mineral is involved in over 325 enzymatic reactions in the body. These include muscular contraction and relaxation, neurological activity, cardiac activity, protein and nucleic acids, and bone metabolism.
Researchers further revealed that it plays a pivotal role in aerobic and anaerobic energy production, specifically in the metabolism of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the energy currency of the body.
Magnesium deficiencies in athletes are also believed to be widespread. In studies, it was found that basketball players, footballers, and gymnasts only consumed about 70% of the RDA for magnesium.
The female runners, on the other hand, scored even worse as their magnesium intake was as low as 59%.
In a three-month study in the United States, it was found that magnesium depletion affected the exercise performance of 10 female participants.
According to researchers, the women had a total RDA of 310 mgs per day in the first month. In the second month, supplementation was withdrawn to make their diet magnesium-deficient. The third month was about replenishing the magnesium levels.
The researchers asked the female subjects to cycle at heightened intensities until they were able to reach 80% of their maximum heart rate. They also took measurements, such as ECG, blood tests, and respiratory gas analysis.
It was found that deficiency in magnesium reduced metabolic efficiency and increased the consumption of oxygen. It also failed to meet the heart rate required for performance, which is something that athletes should have.
