(Newswire.net — December 5, 2017) Orlando, FL — Depression and coronary artery disease are two different conditions, but they can both happen in one person. When they do, there are frightening, undesirable consequences.

People with depression and CAD are found to be more at risk of premature death. Coronary artery disease is the most common form of heart disease. Recently, more studies have actually been focusing on the effect of depression or psychological distress or depression on the risk of death in individuals with CAD.

The team of researchers from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City, UT performed a large-scale study. This research study aimed to investigate the association between CAD diagnosis and afterward getting a depression diagnosis.

This research team was led by Heidi May, Ph.D., a cardiovascular epidemiologist at Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute. Further, the findings were published in the European Heart Journal: Quality of Care & Clinical Outcomes.

In this study, there were 24,137 participants with CAD. The researchers utilized the standard diagnostic tool called the International Classification of Diseases codes, in determining whether the participants had depression.

It was found that 3,646 or 15 percent of the participants received a depression diagnosis during CAD follow-up. It is further worth mentioning that these participants were female and younger, and they were compared with their depression-free counterparts.

According to the researchers, they were also more prone to diabetes and to have been formerly diagnosed with depression. They were also less susceptible to having myocardial infarction, or even heart attack, during follow-up.

It has also been found that among all those diagnosed with depression, 27 percent got their depression diagnosis within a year of CAD diagnosis.

There are many antidepressants available in the market today. These medications have been found to be helpful, but they could also cause some side effects. Further, they do not actually work for everyone.

There are safer alternatives like ashwagandha, which could aid in alleviating depression. In a controlled 60-day study involving stressed adults, it was found that those who took 600mg per day had a reduction in severe depression by 79 percent. The placebo group, on the other hand, only had a 10 percent increase.
