(Newswire.net — November 23, 2022) Orlando, FL — Health authorities have long been warning against the factors that contribute to the worsening of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. It appears that aside from dietary and lifestyle factors, age also plays a role.

A study suggests that women with rheumatoid arthritis tend to have a greater decline in physical function after menopause.

The findings of this study were published in Rheumatology.

It involved looking into 8189 women with rheumatoid arthritis. The researchers have particularly found that pre-menopausal women experienced a slower physical decline compared to those that were post-menopausal.

Experts have long said that physical function is an essential aspect of study in individuals with the condition as it affects their quality of life. Women are found to have rheumatoid arthritis at a rate that thrives greater than men, and even has a more severe decline and increased disability.

In previous studies, it has been found that women with this disease experience changes in their disease correlating to reproductive and hormonal life events, such as childbirth. Pregnancy has been found to be linked with decreased RA incidence but during the post-partum period, they have a higher likelihood of disease onset.

Further, women who have early menopause are more likely to have rheumatoid arthritis than those who experience normal or late menopause.

“Further study is needed as to why women with rheumatoid arthritis are suffering a greater decline in function after menopause,” said the paper’s lead author, Elizabeth Mollard.

“Not only is this decline causing suffering for women, but it is also costly to both individuals and the healthcare system as a whole. Research is specifically needed on the mechanism connecting these variables with the eventual goal of identifying interventions that can maintain or improve function in postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis.”

Scientists continue to carry out studies to investigate the various aspects of arthritis and how it can be managed well. Dietary and lifestyle improvements combined with the use of certain medications are some of the best disease control strategies.
