Research Highlights Importance To Stimulate Brain Early in Life

(Newswire.net — June 14, 2022) Orlando, FL — Today, more and more researchers are carrying out studies to look into the remedies useful in boosting and protecting brain health.

The findings of this research were published in the PLOS Medicine journal.

It was spearheaded by the University of Exeter and involved data from more than 2,000 mentally fit people over the age of 65.

The investigators looked into the theory that experiences in early or mid-life make people more resilient to changes that age or illness cause.  Further, the researchers suggest they have a higher “cognitive reserve.”

This analysis was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and had a research team that included collaborators from the universities of Bangor, Newcastle, and Cambridge.

“Losing mental ability is not inevitable in later life. We know that we can all take action to increase our chances of maintaining our own mental health, through healthy living and engaging in stimulating activities,” said Linda Clare, Professor of Clinical Psychology of Ageing and Dementia at the University of Exeter.

“It’s important that we understand how and why this occurs, so we can give people meaningful and effective measures to take control of living full and active lives into older age.”

Individuals who engage in stimulating activity that ends up stretching the brain have been found to have a higher cognitive reserve. A stimulating activity may also be one that challenges the brain to use different strategies that exercise a variety of networks.
