Researchers Suggest Even Mild Exercise Enhances Memory Function

A study was carried out and published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This study was carried out by researchers at the University of California, Irvine, and the Japan’s University of Tsukuba.

The investigators particularly found that even very light exercises increased the connectivity between brain parts responsible for memory formation and storage. They revealed that a single 10-minute period of mild exertion can produce considerable cognitive health benefits. 

Through the use of high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging, the research team looked into the brains of the participants shortly after exercise sessions. They observed better connectivity between the hippocampal dentate gyrus and cortical areas associated with detailed memory processing.

According to project co-leader Michael Yassa, the hippocampus is critical for the creation of new memories; it’s one of the first regions of the brain to deteriorate as we get older — and much more severely in Alzheimer’s disease.

Yassa is a UCI professor and Chancellor’s Fellow of neurobiology & behavior and director of UCI’s Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory.

The neuroscientists also revealed that the heightened connectivity level predicted the degree of recall enhancement.

“What we observed is that these 10-minute periods of exercise showed results immediately afterward,” he added.
