Rheumatologists Now Warn Against the Surprising Risks of Ra Treatments

(Newswire.net — July 26, 2019) Orlando, FL — RA can be managed through the use of medications. However, it is important to remember that these pharmaceutical drugs can produce some side effects.

Diane Horowitz, MD, warns that some are common and some not so common.

Horowitz is an assistant professor of rheumatology at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine in Hempstead, New York.

Some of the commonly-used medications are steroids, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) to manage the RA condition, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to control the symptoms.

However, NSAIDs are linked with side effects like heartburn, belching, and some other stomach issues.

According to Matthew Husa, MD, once you start RA management, NSAID use should be only for add-on symptom relief.

Husa is a rheumatologist and assistant professor in the division of rheumatology and immunology at the Ohio State Medical Center in Columbus.

NSAIDs have been found to cause irritation in the stomach lining, and this often results in bleeding. Steroids, on the other hand, could lead to weight gain, hypertension, reduced bone health, and high blood sugar.

While steroids are helpful for a while, they can be toxic when used on a long-term basis.

Multiple studies have been carried out to explore the arthritis-fighting benefits of some natural remedies, which include curcumin.

According to researchers, curcumin has long been thought to be a safer alternative to pain relievers. What makes it even more beneficial is that its use is also associated with a myriad of health benefits.

Research has shown curcumin was able to decrease RA symptoms and relive swelling due to its anti-inflammatory effects.

There have even been studies that show curcumin could be a better treatment than conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This is due to the fact that it is effective and safer to use.

Aside from its anti-inflammatories, it also has genoprotective, antifungal, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, antiproliferative, antiviral, renoprotective, insulin-sensitizing, androgenic, antifibrotic, neurorestorative, and metal-chelating properties.

It also contains anticoagulant, antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-amyloidogenic, anti-cytotoxic, antibiotic, antimicrobial, anti-purulent, immunomodulating, and anticatabolic agents.

In a clinical study, the researchers had 5 subjects with rheumatoid arthritis. It has been found that curcumin was able to produce some significantly higher percentage of improvement in the scoring criteria.

Researchers even say its effectivity was better than that of NSAIDs.

Aside from its arthritis-fighting benefits, its use is linked with a range of health benefits.

Supplements have been found beneficial in delivering the therapeutic goodness of curcumin. One formula to consider is VitaBreeze Curcumin (https://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
