Scientists Discover Many Stroke Survivors Fail to Improve Health Habits

The American Heart Association has set the seven heart-health goals, and less than 1 in 100 survivors of stroke met these requirements. One in five, on the other hand, has been found to meet four of these goals.

Study has found that the proportion of stroke survivors who fail to meet none or one of the goals increased from 18 percent in 1988-1994 to 35 percent in 2011-2014, the study found.

During this period, obesity has also increased from 27 percent to 39 percent. There was also an increase in prediabetes from 49 percent to 56 percent. There was also an increase in the percentage of stroke survivors with a poor diet from 14 percent to 51 percent.

The research, however, provided some good news. There was also a decline in rates of high blood pressure and high cholesterol by about 19 percent and 27 percent, respectively.

Scientists said that individuals with the lowest scores were more susceptible to be poor, black, and have less than a high school education. Lowest scores mean meeting just zero or one of the Life’s Simple 7 goals.

They suggest that behavioral change can be extremely difficult. This is particularly true to one that has extra barriers imposed on them from stroke, such as lack of independence and disability.
