Scientists Now Found a Way To Enhance Effectiveness of Antibiotics

(Newswire.net — February 18, 2021) Orlando, FL — Over decades, researchers have been carried out studies to look into the effects of antibiotics. It is worth noting that this type of medication is often used in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

A study was carried out by the researchers from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore).

This study was spearheaded by Assistant Professor Yang Liang from the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences (SCELSE) at NTU.

They found that antibiotics remain effective even if there is disruption in the bacteria’s cell-to-cell communication and ability to latch on each other.

The findings of this research were published in Nature Communications, which is academic journal by the Nature Publishing Group.

Experts say that this research breakthrough is a major step forward in looking into the alarming concern of antibiotic resistance. It opens up new options for treatment in battling chronic and persistent bacterial infections.

The study particularly found that a certain community of bacteria called biofilm can provide a strong line of defense in resisting antibiotics. The researchers in this study have successfully shown the manner biofilms can be disrupted to let antibiotics continue their good work.

According to Asst. Prof. Yang, who also teaches at NTU’s School of Biological Sciences, many types of bacteria that used to be easily killed by antibiotics have started to develop antibiotic resistance or tolerance, either through acquiring the antibiotic resistant genes or by forming biofilms.

Decades of research have suggested that antibiotics are one of the most useful medications, especially for UTIs. However, it is also important to note that such a medication can produce side effects.

In cases of UTIs, antibiotics work in killing the infection culprit by sticking with it and eliminating it out of the body. However, such a medication also ends up destroying the good bacteria that have roles to play for human health.

Aside from messing with the gut bacteria, antibiotics are also notoriously known for the drug resistance they could produce.

Today, more and more researchers are strongly recommending some safer preventive alternatives in battling with the infection. One of these remedies is called D-mannose, which is a therapeutic sugar that is widely resorted to via supplementation nowadays.

This remedy works by adhering to the UTI-culprit, such as E.coli, and eliminating the bacteria from the body. This significantly reduces the odds of urinary tract infections and their recurrence.

Formulas like Divine Bounty D-mannose are widely resorted to by sufferers of this infection. This formula has many features, such as the cranberry and dandelion extracts it contains (http://www.amazon.com/D-Mannose-600mg-Cranberry-Dandelion-Extract/dp/B01LX5KGF0).
