Scientists Suggest Adequate Sleep Reduces Cardiovascular Disease Risk

A study, which was carried out by the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), was published in an online publication called Nature.

The study findings reveal that inadequate sleep increases the odds of serious health issues, which include cardiovascular disease. It has been found that sleep offers protection against atherosclerosis, which pertains to the buildup of arterial plaques. 

The researchers particularly found that insufficient sleep causes an increase in the production of inflammatory white blood cells that are known to be major contributors to atherosclerosis.

This research was spearheaded by Filip Swirski, PhD, of the MGH Center for Systems Biology.

The investigators found that sleep aids in regulating the production in the bone marrow of inflammatory cells and the health of blood vessels. When there is sleep disruption, it also breaks down control of inflammatory cell production. 

This, according to experts, in turn could result in more inflammation and the increased risk of heart diseases. 

During the study, the researchers have also been able to identify a certain brain hormone known to control wakefulness. They have further found how this hormone controls processes in the bone marrow and offers protection against cardiovascular disease.

The researchers subjected mice to repeated sleep interruptions. These were mice genetically programmed to develop atherosclerosis. This was conducted by the investigators in an effort to learn how insufficient sleep increases the risk of atherosclerosis.

It has been found those subjected to sleep fragmentation had higher levels of inflammatory cells found to contribute to atherosclerosis. They also tended to have larger arterial plaques in their blood vessels.
