Scientists Warn Sleep Apnea Increases Odds of Alzheimer’s Disease

(Newswire.net — May 16, 2022) Orlando, FL — Sleep apnea is quite common today and is being widely researched by scientists. It is worth noting that in some studies, it is also linked with other diseases.

A study was carried out and published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, which is the journal of the American Thoracic Society.

In this new research, it has been found that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may place the elderly population at a heightened odds of Alzheimer’s disease.

This study’s title is “Obstructive Sleep Apnea Severity Affects Amyloid Burden in Cognitively Normal Elderly: A Longitudinal Study.”

Scientists report that there was an increase in the biomarkers for the amyloid-beta over time in elderly individuals with OSA in proportion to OSA severity. It is worth noting that the amyloid-beta is the plaque-building peptide linked with Alzheimer’s disease.

Further, those with more apneas per hour were found to have a greater buildup of brain amyloid over time.

This neurodegenerative disorder called Alzheimer’s disease affects roughly five million older Americans. However, OSA is even more common impacting 30 to 80 percent of the elderly.

According to Ricardo S. Osorio, MD, several studies have suggested that sleep disturbances might contribute to amyloid deposits and accelerate cognitive decline in those at risk for AD.

Osorio is a senior study author and assistant professor of psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine.

“However, so far it has been challenging to verify causality for these associations because OSA and AD share risk factors and commonly coexist,” Osorio added.

This interesting study involved 208 participants, between the age bracket of 55 and 90 years, with normal cognition as measured by standardized tests and clinical evaluations.

Andrew Varga, MD, Ph.D., suggests that based on the findings, these changes were occurring in the preclinical stages of AD.

Varga is a study co-author and a physician specializing in sleep medicine and neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

Sleep apnea and Alzheimer’s are common nowadays, and more and more researchers are even investigating their cures. It is worth noting that some remedies like the use of curcumin may be potentially helpful.

Curcumin is a phytochemical that can be found in turmeric and is loaded with therapeutic agents. It has genoprotective, antifungal, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, insulin-sensitizing, androgenic, antifibrotic, neurorestorative, and metal-chelating properties.

It also contains anti-platelet, antioxidant, anti-amyloidogenic, anti-cytotoxic, antibiotic, antimicrobial, anti-purulent, antitumor, immunomodulating, and anti-catabolic agents.

Some studies suggest it may work wonders in fighting sleep apnea and brain health issues like Alzheimer’s disease. (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00JA4TLTI/)
