Sleep Disruption May Trigger Cardiovascular Disease, Researchers Warn

A study was carried out and published in PLOS Biology, which is an open-access journal. In this research, it has been found there is a link between sleep disruption and the increased odds of atherosclerosis. 

This remarkable study was carried out by Raphael Vallat, Vyoma Shah, and Matthew Walker of the University of California at Berkeley and colleagues.

The investigators particularly revealed that fragmented sleep has the ability to exacerbate atherosclerosis. Further, it may increase the odds of stroke via an effect on inflammatory pathways.  

The findings of this interesting study offer a mechanism in explaining the long-standing observation that poor sleep increases the odds of stroke and heart disease. This has led experts to recommend some measures in lessening the risk.

The authors measured sleep disruption to test whether the effect may be due in part to increased inflammatory signaling. In this testing, they utilized both sleep lab-based polysomnography and a simple movement detector worn on the wrist over multiple nights (actigraphy). 

They also utilized standard blood cell counts in measuring levels of monocytes and neutrophils. These are two types of white blood cells that are responsible for driving inflammatory pathways.  

The results have particularly demonstrated that sleep fragmentation was able to predict both higher neutrophil counts and increased coronary artery calcium. It is worth noting that sleep fragmentation was measured by actigraphy.  

With the use of mediation analysis, which is a statistical method, they were able to see that the influence of sleep fragmentation on coronary artery calcium was mediated through the increase in neutrophils.

This means that poor sleep results in an increase in neutrophils, which in turn causes an increase in the odds of atherosclerosis.
