(Newswire.net — June 13, 2022) Orlando, FL — Millions and millions of people suffer from arthritis in the United States alone. Experts have been strongly stressing the relevance of making dietary and lifestyle improvements to manage the condition and live longer.
A study was carried out and published in Arthritis Care and Research journal.
In this University of Manchester-led research, it has been found that smoking is linked with earlier deaths in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Further, what makes this research even more interesting is that those who quit smoking were able to achieve a dramatic reduction in their risk of earlier death.
Scientists at NIHR Manchester Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit were determined to find out the association between stopping smoking and subsequent mortality in sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis.
Experts have long been warning against smoking, which has been found to play a role in rheumatoid arthritis development. Further, these sufferers are also found to have a heightened risk of death due to other health issues.
These include cardiovascular disease, cancer, severe infection, and respiratory diseases.
This interesting study was spearheaded by Rebecca Joseph, Research Assistant at the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research at The University of Manchester.
The findings have particularly shown that the odds of death were nearly two times higher in those who smoked than in individuals who never smoked. At the same time, the mortality risk for former smokers was the same for those who never smoked.
In those who stopped smoking, there was a drop in the risk of death for each additional year they had given up.
“This research provides important evidence that the risk of early death starts to decline in patients who stop smoking, and continues year on year,” said Deborah Symmons.
Symmons is a Professor of Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Epidemiology at The University of Manchester.
“We hope that this research can be used by public health professionals and rheumatologists to help more people quit smoking and reduce premature deaths, particularly for newly diagnosed patients with rheumatoid arthritis,” she added.
The number of studies looking into the various aspects of arthritis continues to grow. It is worth noting that in many studies, there are many ways found helpful to arthritis sufferers in addition to smoking cessation.
These include the use of plant-based remedies like glucosamine, which is known best for its ability to repair cartilage damage. In some studies, it has been found that it reduces pain and inflammation.
What makes it all the more beneficial is that it also works wonders in enhancing physical limitations. There are extra-strength formulas like VitaBreeze Glucosamine that may be helpful in delivering the healing goodness of this remedy.
