(Newswire.net — March 8, 2018) Darien, CONNECTICUT –The recent back to back Noreaster storms pounding the NorthEast United States have caused more agony than school closings and hazardous road conditions. In addition to contending with downed tree limbs, there are quite a few people going to their chiropractors’ office in search of relief. Back pain is a fairly common sequela to shoveling and snow removal can be challenging even for people who regularly exercise.
One glaring reason that snow shoveling causes so much low back pain is that many people are just plain out of shape. Most people will underestimate their level of fitness and feel they can handle the shoveling. Their spines feel differently. These well-intentioned individuals are the bread and butter for most chiropractors. For those who are not in decent shape, shoveling can cause serious lower back pain if they are not careful. It is imperative to bend your knees to the snow and lift with your legs. Be mindful of the fact that shoveling requires a different set of muscles that are not exercised with conventional treadmills or elliptical machines.
You may be one strong person but the muscles in the lower back can topple the strongest weightlifter if he or she shovels the wrong way. The best way to understand is to watch a video on correct shoveling on YouTube. Try not to assume that because you are in great shape that you are immune from having a back problem. If the snow is heavy, space out your shoveling. Take breaks every 15-20 minutes. If you feel your back muscles tightening up, maybe it is time to give that neighbor’s son a call to finish the job. Don’t put your back into it, put common sense into play.
Your lower back could use some regular attention by incorporating stretching into your work out. Most gyms have back exercise machines that go unused when compared to arm curling machines. Just because you cannot see your lower back, don’t ignore it. It will let you know when you mess up. Then you will be spending more time in your chiropractor’s office.
