(Newswire.net — March 2, 2017) Orlando, FL — It is undeniable that arthritis is one of the most prevalent medical conditions today. In the United States alone, it impacts millions of people. There are pain management options thought to be helpful for individuals suffering from this painful condition.

Some cartilage repair techniques may help to restore mobility and reduce pain in arthritis sufferers. Pain and physical limitations are among the most common symptoms of the condition. These symptoms may not just hinder sufferers from functioning normally on a daily basis, but may also subject them to a reduced quality of life.

At a major medical meeting, two separate new studies were presented which demonstrated objective scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of the two most-commonly performed cartilage repair techniques in reducing pain and mobility restoration.

The participants received cartilage and bone grafts and there were also those that had a procedure which resulted in new tissue growth. It was found that all of the participants in both studies recovered more knee functionality as well as experienced pain reduction after the procedures.

Surgeons actually had no evidence that the surgeries, which are commonly practiced, were effective prior to the results of the studies.

According to Riley Williams, MD, a co-author of the study and Director of the Hospital for Special Surgeries Institute for Cartilage Repair, one of the studies looked into individuals who had an osteochondral allograft. The other study followed up the sufferers who had a microfracture procedure.

Dr. Williams also added that the findings of both studies may be able to help healthcare providers come up with more accurate outcomes for individuals looking for relief from cartilage pain.

The research was presented at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeon’s (AAOS) annual meeting in Washington, DC. The titles of the studies are:  “The Microfracture Technique for Treatment of Articular Cartilage Lesions in the Knee: A Prospective Cohort Evaluation”, and “A Prospective Analysis of Knee Cartilage Defects Treated with Fresh Osteochondral Allografts”.

While these procedures may be helpful, there are those who find the use of certain medications and natural alternatives to be helpful. One of these medications is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID).

There are also arthritis sufferers who reduce their risk of suffering from the possible side effects linked with the use of pain medications, such as NSAIDs, therefore they often turn to the use of natural supplements such as glucosamine.

Glucosamine is a naturally-occurring substance in the body. It has the potential to repair cartilage damage without causing side effects.
