(Newswire.net — May 11, 2016) National Harbor, Maryland — To help manage sports-related concussions and educate student athletes about the dangers of concussions, Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) in Virginia is implementing an advanced sports concussion platform for all of its high school student athletes.
Each of Spotsylvania County Public Schools’ five high schools, and one middle school pilot test, will utilize the online- and mobile-based sports concussion management platform, XLNTbrain Sport™. According to Keith Wolfe, who oversees athletics as the Executive Director of Secondary Education and Leadership, the goal was to elevate its previous concussion protocols, adhering to the latest “best practices” for pre-season baseline testing, detection, and recovery guidance.
Developed by neurologist, Dr. Harry Kerasidis in Maryland, XLNTbrain Sport™ integrates his more than 20 years experience treating concussions, along with incorporating the latest in science and standards established by several industry organizations including the guidelines set by the National Athletic Trainers Association and American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Kerasidis is also certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and graduate of Georgetown University.
Athletic trainers from Spotsylvania may have heard about XLNTbrain after nearby University of Mary Washington announced plans to begin using the same platform next year, according to Ian Rogol, the school’s head athletic trainer.
“After taking a serious look at what was available, we decided to incorporate XLNTbrain into our athletic training for all our student-athletes,” said Rogol, who manages a team of three certified athletic trainers for about 500 student-athletes. “It exceeds all the position statements on handling concussions by our National Athletic Training Association, and provides an all-encompassing approach to managing concussions.”
Spotsylvania is not the only school division to enhance its concussion protocols. Among many other states reviewing similar plans with XLNTbrain, last season Michigan began a widely-reported concussion protocol pilot on nearly 10,000 student athletes through the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
