(Newswire.net — August 10, 2020) Orlando, FL — The suicide rates in many areas around the globe continue to soar. It is important to realize that there are many causes of suicidal behaviors that consumers should be wary about.
According to a new study, individuals with chronic health issues appear to have an increased risk of suicide. These include certain conditions, such as traumatic brain injury.
The investigators looked into almost 2,700 individuals in the United States who died due to suicide between 2000 and 2013. It is worth mentioning that they identified 17 medical conditions associated with a heightened risk of suicide.
These included asthma, back pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disorder, migraine, brain injury, cancer, congestive heart failure, Parkinson’s disease, psychogenic pain, sleep disorders and stroke.
The study was published online June 12 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
According to Brian Ahmedani, lead investigator, although suicide risk appears to be pervasive across most physical health conditions, prevention efforts appear to be particularly important for patients with a traumatic brain injury, whose odds of suicide are increased nearly ninefold.
Ahmedani is director of psychiatry research at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.
Mental health experts have long been stressing the importance of taking helpful measures in improving mood and fighting depression. It is important to realize that these chronic ailments could trigger depression in various ways.
It is vital to take some preventive measures that could ward off depression to reduce the likelihood of suicide.
Researchers find that some all-natural remedies like curcumin may work wonders in decreasing the symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD). This natural healing compound can be found in an Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese treatment called turmeric, which is a spice.
According to Roger S. McIntyre, MD, curcumin does have an effect on several physiological systems that are implicated in the causes of depression.
McIntyre is a professor of psychiatry and pharmacology and head of the Mood Disorders Psychopharmacology Unit at the University of Toronto, told Psychiatry Advisor.
“It certainly would be a reasonable hypothesis that it could be in possession of antidepressant properties,” he adds.
A recently carried out study was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial has shown that curcumin use significantly improve depression symptoms. This means that this natural healing compound could work wonders in reducing the risk of suicide.
