Study Reveals Daily Consumption of Green Tea May Help to Reduce Cognitive Impairment

(Newswire.net — December 1, 2016) Orlando, FL — Green tea has long been believed to be a therapeutic beverage and has been consumed in many areas around the world for potential health purposes. One of the possible benefits it is believed to offer is favorable to the brain.

A research study reveals that daily consumption of green tea may potentially reduce the risk of cognitive impairment. The brain is susceptible to various threats, especially when it is not nourished with the right nutrients.

In a Japanese study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants who belonged to the elderly population achieved improvements in their mental health by consuming a minimum of 2 cups of green tea every day. In the study, it was also found that the participants who did not consume green tea did not experience the possible therapeutic effects. There were 1,000 Japanese participants who were 70 years and above.

The participants were made to undergo a variety of tests of mental status, such as those involving memory, attention, and orientation as well as those that measure their ability to follow commands.  They were required to tell the research team the frequency in which they consumed the beverage.

According to Shinichi Kuriyama, MD, PhD, the test scores revealed that participants who consumed green tea were also less likely to suffer from cognitive impairment. Dr. Kuriyama is from the Department of Public Health and Forensic Medicine at Tohoku University’s medical school in Japan.

Based on the same study, consumption of green tea was associated with the lowest risk of cognitive impairment by 54%. This was demonstrated in the results of their test scores within the range of cognitive impairment. The researchers further reveal that consuming four to six cups of green tea every week may help to reduce the risk of cognitive impairment by 38%
