(Newswire.net–July 25, 2013) Tampa, FL—Although most pallets are made of wood and are the commonly seen frames that are used by supermarkets, there are literally thousands of sizes and types that exist in order to accommodate different size needs and load factors depending upon the materials it is designed to ship or carry.

The pallet industry seems to have embraced the research and development of some of the major universities throughout the United States like Virginia Tech and Penn State in order to analyze the usefulness and improved aspects of a pallet.  Testing load factors with regards to weight and safety are critically important when relying on the performance of these wooden or other material pallets.

In an industry such as pallets, it seems that changes do not occur frequently nor are they necessary, however fine tuning aspects of understanding the science of designing better pallets is left to the university quants.  The major trends of the past few decades have been more significant than in most of the early years.  The growing preference for block pallets used by large retailers along with the changing use of recycled and reused pallets has altered management “knowledge resources”.  With international trade and commerce occurring at the pace it has grown within the past twenty years, international regulations and the advent of pallet pooling organizations has been on the rise.

As companies stay up to speed on the advances of pallet technology, their advantage in industry competitions becomes quite keen and can make huge differences in their efficiencies and therefore economies of scale.   Operational know how clearly translate into financial performance as volume, speed, storage, and more “fail safe” practices are incorporated into a business become vital.

The NWPCA (National Wooden Pallet and Container Association) has committed some serious time and resources in this area of efficient use of pallets in the industry to help companies to maximize their logistical operations.  Many businesses still assume that a pallet is a pallet and do not give the time and attention to understanding the nuances inherent in carving out efficiencies that may appear minor, but add up to make vast differences in the bottom line.
