Too Much Sleep or Too Little of It Increases the Odds of Stroke, Study Shows

Experts have long been stressing the relevance of taking some measures to get adequate sleep, and this means not getting too much or too little of it.

A study was carried out and published in the online issue of Neurology, which is the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

This recently carried-out review has shown that sleep disorders like sleep apnea and insomnia are linked with the risk of stroke as well as recovery from stroke. 

Due to the findings, the authors suggest that individuals who have had a stroke or a mini-stroke be screened for sleep disorders. It is worth noting that a mini-stroke is also called a transient ischemic attack.

According to study author Dirk M. Hermann, MD., although sleep disorders are common after a stroke, very few stroke patients are tested for them.

Hermann is from the University Hospital Essen in Essen, Germany. 

“The results of our review show that should change, as people with sleep disorders may be more likely to have another stroke or other negative outcomes than people without sleep problems, such as having to go to a nursing home after leaving the hospital,” he added.

The investigators also recommend that sleep apnea be treated through the use of the evidence-based continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP). Previous studies have shown that its use can improve outcomes after stroke.

For this literature review, the investigators looked into dozens of studies that investigated the association between sleep disturbances and stroke. 

It is worth noting that generally, sleep disorders fall into two categories, namely sleep breathing problems and sleep-wake disorders. When it comes to sleep breathing issues like sleep apnea, there is a disruption in breathing during sleep.

In cases of sleep-wake disorders, such as insomnia and restless leg syndrome, the amount of time spent asleep is affected.
