(Newswire.net — June 17, 2013) Calgary, AB — Have you ever wondered what natural gas is? Natural gas is a clean burning fuel. There is an abundance of sources holding this valuable energy source. As a naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixture of methane and other gases, it is often used as an alternative fuel for homes and cars, as either a compressed natural gas (CNG) or a liquefied gas (LNG).
According to the Alternative Fuels Data Centre, “Natural gas is an odorless, nontoxic, gaseous mixture of hydrocarbons—predominantly methane (CH4). It accounts for about a quarter of the energy used in the United States. About one-third goes to residential and commercial uses, such as heating and cooking; one-third to industrial uses; and one-third to electric power production. Although natural gas is a clean-burning alternative fuel that has long been used to power natural gas vehicles, only about one-tenth of 1% is used for transportation fuel.”
Natural gas producers are committed to helping individuals and communities better understand the process of natural gas extraction. By providing fact –based answers to frequently asked questions they can educate the public in a practical way.
There are many who oppose natural gas development because they feel that safety of the public and the water systems are not being taken into account.
They may not be aware that there are extensive safety requirements and precautions that gas companies must follow. These regulations are put in place to protect individuals and the environment.
The American Gas Association states “Natural gas utilities and pipelines undertake a wide range of pipeline integrity, pipeline safety and public education programs. The design, construction, operation, inspection and maintenance of all operating pipelines are subject to state and federal regulations and requirements. The inspection and maintenance performed by operators takes into account all of the following: incident and leak history, corrosion control records, continuing surveillance records, patrolling records, maintenance history, local conditions, and excavation damage experience.”
The industry must ensure that these standards are met. They do this by working closely with regulators, employees, contractors, communities and individuals.
According to America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) “ANGA companies have worked effectively with states, whose regulators are best positioned to account for the geology, water issues and infrastructure needs within their borders. We are already regulated by numerous federal statutes, and it is appropriate that the states oversee the operations of natural gas producers, in part because they have been doing so effectively for many decades. This roundtable offers the natural gas community a chance to highlight the steps we take every day to safely and responsibly produce this critical energy resource.”
