(Newswire.net — April, 4th 2013) Lowell, MA — AHA (American Heart Association) reports that there is about 2.7 million Americans have AF (atrial fibrillation) where the heart’s upper chambers to react in utter confusion instead of contracting normally.

A beta blocker prescription is given to with AF to help them control their heart rythm and it does not control the symptoms for every patient according to to researchers.

This is where yoga comes into play: This may be something they should consider, said W. Todd Cade, Researcher from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Yoga could be a beneficial treatment for people with atrial fibrillation. Obviously they should talk to their doctor before they start a program,” Cade, who wasn’t involved in the new research, told Reuters Health.

There are a lot of other benefits of yoga, and there aren’t a lot of negatives” he added.

49 people that had atrial fibrillation did a study for three months in Kansas City that tracked study volunteers heart symptoms along with their heart rate, blood pressure, anxiety, depression and overall quality of life.

The second phase of this study had the participants go to a group yoga class two a week for for another three months and again reporting on their symptoms and quality of life. It also turned out that all patients were on constant medications through the study period.

Despite the contrary, the statistics of times reported of the heart quivering was also validated by a heart monitor that showed a drop of about four times during the first three months to twice during the yoga phase. Showing that their average heart rate d from dropped from 67 beats per minute at the beginning of the study to about 61 and 62 bpm after yoga and numbers showed that the anxiety numbers have also declined from 34 (on a scale of 20 to 80) to 25 on average after just three months of practicing yoga. It seems that depression and and other mental health have improved as well.
