Hawaiian Themed Wedding Ideas

Thinking about having your wedding themed in a Hawaiian style? Here's everything you need to know to plan the perfect day.

(Newswire.net -- November 10, 2019) --Anyone who has visited Hawaii knows the magic of the islands. The soft tropical breezes, the scent of the ocean air and the warm, relaxed culture are just a few of the reasons Hawaii is a top choice for destination weddings. Even if you can’t celebrate your nuptials in the islands, you can bring the inspiration and customs of an island themed wedding anywhere.

The Attire

Hawaii exudes a laid back, casual vibe. You rarely see anyone wearing suits and ties. You’ll often see brides in a casual white, strappy or strapless flowing dress; something she can easily wear walking along a sandy beach. For men, a button down collared shirt of any color is typical, with the groom sporting a lighter cream, beige or white shirt.  Bridesmaids in matching sundresses, capturing a breezy effortless style.

Leis and Flowers

Leis (or lei, as they say in Hawaiian, as they don’t differentiate between singular and plural) are customarily adorned by all participants in the wedding as well as significant family members like the mothers parents of the bride and groom. For men, maile leis, traditionally worn only by members of the royal family in Hawaii, are reserved for the groom and officiant. The groomsmen typically wear kukui nut leis or flower leis of orchids.

For brides, strands of sweet smelling pikake or tuberose add a delicate touch and the white color won’t stain the white of her dress. The same can be worn for bridesmaids, or white orchids tend to be more resilient and budget friendly. A haku lei, or a ring of flowers adorned like a crown at the top of the bride’s head is also an option.

Flowers like ginger, orchids and bird of paradise add a tropical, colorful accent. Ti Leafs add a fresh, green backdrop.

The Food

A luau, an ancient Hawaiian celebratory feast, usually features traditional foods like kalua pig and poi. If that’s not accessible, incorporating tropical fruits like pineapple and coconut will add that polynesian flair. Consider creating a signature cocktail like a Mai Tai, Pina Colada, Lava Flow or Blue Hawaii.

The Setting

An outdoor wedding is ideal, but if your wedding is in the dead of winter and your don’t have ocean waves as your backdrop, just remember that the only real requirement for a traditional Hawaiian wedding is Aloha and Ohana, meaning love and family.
