(Newswire.net -- December 4, 2019) --Traveling by car during the winter holidays is always an opportunity to go out as a family, visit relatives in other states or simply enjoy some leisure time off. But, to fully enjoy this season and without surprises is important to consider safety at the wheel.

Driving with caution and at a moderate speed, while using a seat belt, are some of the basic elements that must be taken into account. But not only should we look at these elements, it is also important that the policy of the car is current and that you know everything that it includes.

Christmas and New Years are two dates in which we like to enjoy the spirit of the holidays. However, it is necessary to take certain measures to ensure the protection of the car and the family to travel safely.

Car conditions and responsible driving are fundamental to avoid an accident, as it allows the driver to react efficiently to any adversity. We can count on some minimum measures to take into account before starting the trip.

  • Drive at a safe speed and respect road signs: During Christmas time the number of cars in the streets is higher, so do not forget to respect the traffic lights, the continuous and not continuous turns, as well as the lanes confined to buses and ambulances.
  • Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol: It is advisable to designate a driver if you choose to drink at celebration meetings.
  • Don't give in to cellphone distractions: According to statistics, a large number of accidents occur because of distractions related to cellphones. Talking on the phone or sending messages while in front of the wheel reduces the driver's concentration and ability to react to an unexpected event.  If you need to make a call or send a message, it is recommended that you park in a safe place and do so.
  • Always wear a seat belt: Seat belts save lives. Always use a seat belt when traveling in a car and use child seats in the rear seats if traveling with children.
  • Skip driving during peak hours or busy roads: During celebrations, traffic jams are common during the day and so are accidents. It is highly advisable to avoid leaving at peak hours by car, it is preferable to arrive a few hours before or after and not to travel in areas of high traffic.
  • Check tire pressure, wear and condition: Tires should always be at air level according to manufacturer's specifications. It should also be checked that the engraving of the tires is not worn, especially the front wheels. It is advisable to rotate the wheels every 10 thousand kilometers.
  • Check oil and antifreeze levels: It is advisable to change the antifreeze liquid before going out on the road and once a year.  It is also advisable to check the level of the oil before embarking on any journey and change it if the liquid is dirty or at a low level.
  • Check brake function. They are an essential part of the car's proper functioning. It is therefore advisable to check your fluid so that it is at optimum levels or even consult our mechanic in case of doubt.
  • Check the use and function of the windscreen: Visibility on the road is paramount for safe travel. So, checking that the windshield wipers are working properly and are not broken is essential.
  • Examine battery life: The optimal use of the battery is two years. If the battery life exceeds those years, it is best to replace it with a new one.
  • Check the car's front and rear lights. It is very important to ensure that if you are traveling at night, other cars can see you through the tail lights. And it is also vital that you also have a good view of the road.
  • Have all documents in good standing: When traveling by road is essential to have the license and valid auto insurance, as we do not know when we will face a mishap. Having the vehicle in optimum condition will allow you to undertake the trip to these holiday visits in a calm and safe way that you and your family are protected.

Once you have all that checked out regarding the state of your car, now is time to focus on yourself and safety measurements to take into considerations.Remember that first and foremost, the safety of you and your family comes first. Take precautions and always drive with caution when traveling by road or in the city. Always check the operation of your vehicle and have your car insurance on hand, you do not know when you will need it.
