How to Perform Umrah: Step by Step

As mentioned earlier, the mandatory rites of Umrah are as follows:

  1. Ihraam

  2. Tawaaf

  3. Sa’yee

  4. Qasar

As you can see, it might seem simple at first sight, but when you actually get to know each of the steps, you will come to realize that the Umrah procedure is an intricate and involved one.

Now as to how to perform Umrah.

Ihraam

The foremost critical thing to be aware of before you perform any type of Ibaday in Islam (religious activity) is Niyyah (pure intention).

Therefore, before you start this procedure, you need to set the Niyyah of Umrah from the core of your heart. After having your intention set, you should recite the Talbiyah.

Take a bath (Ghusal). Put on your Ihraam. Now you have must offer prayer in the form of two Rakat Nafal.

After this, you can leave home with your head uncovered, deciding your Niyyah.

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنِّيْ اُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِيْ وَ تَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّيْ

After leaving your home, start reciting, mention Dua’a & Talbiyah continuously. It’s mandatory to recite it once loudly.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

Now enter Masjid Al Haram. Recite Darud e Sharif. Supplicate to ALLAH and move forward towards the Kabah.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وسلم, اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

At this point, fix your eyes on Baitullah and say:

اللّهُ أكبر اللّهُ أكبر, لا إلَهَ الا اللّه, اللّهُ أكبر اللّهُ اكبر, و لِلّه الحمدَ

After doing this, you should recite Talbiyah once again, and continue with Tawaf. It’s also worth mentioning that certain things are prohibited in Ihraam, and they are:

  1. Sexual activity

  2. Covering head/face

  3. Hunting animals of all kind

  4. Foot apparel should not be stitched

  5. Ankle and back of foot should not be exposed

  6. Stitched clothing of any kind

  7. Use of scents on robes or body

  8. Nail cutting

  9. Haircutting on any part of the body

And that’s that. Now let’s move to Tawaf, and continue on the purpose of the pilgrim.

Tawaf

Tawaf is the next mandatory step in the process. Tawaf, quite literally, means moving towards Kabah, taking circuits around it seven times.

Tawaf is performed anti-clockwise, which means the face of the pilgrim should be towards the Kabah on their life.

Wudu is also mandatory for everybody. The right shoulder on the man should be naked, but only during Tawaf. After completing this process, you need to cover both of your shoulders.

The Procedure

Begin your circuits of Tawaf during Umrah from the Hajr-e-Aswad. As you are lucky enough to kiss it, start moving around after doing so. If not able to kiss, it’s better to touch it with your hand of the right.

If touching is not even possible, face Hajr-e-Aswad and point towards it with the right hand. After this, you must recite Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.

During the first three rounds, the men must be quick, move briskly with energy. During the four remaining rounds, you must be gentle and walk calmly. Upon reaching the corner of Yamani, touch it with your right hand and recite Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.

If you cannot touch it, keep moving without pointing towards it. Upon reaching the final fourth corner of Kabah, you must only touch the Hajr-e-Aswad.

After completing seven circuits, go to the Muqam-e-Ibrahim and/or kiss/touch the Hajr-e-Aswad. At this point, you have to offer the two Rakat of Nafal near the Muqam-e-Ibrahim.

If there is no place nearby, you can pray at any place in the Haram. After this, go to Zamzam and drink the sacred water in a standing position. The Tawaf has been completed and you need to relocate closer to Safah & Marwah to perform the next step of Sa’yee.

And keep in mind that despite some of the steps being simpler than others, the importance of them should not be dismissed. For the Umrah, consists of four steps, not of one.

Sa’yee

Sa’yee is the process of running and/or walking between the mounts of Safah and Marwah. There is a total of seven trips on both of the mounts, starting with the Safar and ending at the Marwah.

After completing these trips, you must offer two of Rakat of Nafal. At the end of Sa’yee, the males will entirely shave their heads. Whereas, the females will clip a length of a fingertip off.

This is a critical component of the Sa’yee, which you cannot dismiss. Choosing to avoid this component is choosing to avoid the entirety of Umrah.

Qasar

The final step of Qasar is leaving the Ihraam. The Umrah is complete after the final step is completed. All of the rites have been performed and all of the prohibitions that have come with Ihraam are now removed.

Now you can move on with your alignment in the eyes of Allah, and continue to serve the divine purpose of the Islamic faith.
