(Newswire.net — December 29, 2020) — Cancer is a horrific disease that will affect one out of two people in their lifetime, and, according to WHO, it is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In the USA, it has been estimated that around 1.8 million people will be diagnosed with cancer every year.
With grim statistics like these, it is no wonder that a cancer diagnosis may cause patients to feel anxious and frightened about their future.
However, there is cause for hope. One prominent practicing oncologist, Dr. Robert Nagourney, has pioneered a technique that is currently having double the success rate of standard cancer treatment.
With statistics like these, it is no wonder that Dr. Nagourney is turning heads in the field. But how does this technique work, and does it have proven results?
Functional profiling: a pioneering treatment
Dr. Nagourney, the founder of the Nagourney Cancer Institute, has created a technique called functional profiling, which is currently having double the success rate of more standard treatments.
According to the Nagourney Cancer Institute, functional profiling is very different from genomic testing, which is what is offered by most medical centers. Genomic testing ‘looks for mutations and other changes in each patient’s gene makeup that might guide drug selection.’ However, although this concept sounds promising, the reality is less appealing, as most patients do not have genetic changes that can be used for therapy.
Unlike genomic testing, functional profiling uses each patient’s cells to examine how drugs and targeted agents kill the cancer, allowing physicians to treat every patient and every cancer diagnosis as an individual. Instead of using standard drug combinations that have been designed to treat the ‘average’ patient, Dr. Nagourney treats every cancer diagnosis differently.
Functional profiling works by taking isolated cancer cells directly from a patient’s tumor. Next, these cells are exposed to different kinds of drugs and cancer treatments to see which works best in destroying the cancer cells. Not only does this technique highlight which drugs will work best for each patient, but it is also less harmful, as patients will no longer have to try multiple different cycles of drugs to see which one works.
Does it work?
This pioneering treatment is not only gaining popularity for using innovative methods, it is also turning heads because it works. There have been numerous published studies that highlight the success of Dr. Nagourney’s technique. For example, one meta-analysis emphasized how patients who had ‘active’ drugs selected in the laboratory had a 2.04 fold higher response rate to these drugs and a 1.44 fold higher one-year survival rate.
These numbers speak for themselves. This treatment works because Dr. Nagourney treats each cancer diagnosis as exactly that, individual. Because of Dr. Nagourney’s work, there is no doubt that many lives have been lengthened and saved as a result of his technique.
