(Newswire.net — March 16, 2013) London, UK — In October 2012, a new initiative was launched in the USA to improve the way the country’s luxury carpets and rugs get cleaned. Known as Woolsafe, the initiative has created an academy (the Woolsafe Academy) that aims to train carpet cleaning professionals in the best way to treat wool fibres.
As wool is a natural fibre, it performs differently from synthetic fibres, as used in cheaper carpets and finishes. Wool is hard-wearing and remains soft, which is why is used for high-end carpets and rugs, especially in ethnic handwoven rugs, but special care is required when cleaning carpets and rugs made from this natural fibre. It can be very easy for an improperly trained carpet cleaner, or an amateur who has hired a carpet cleaning machine, to damage a carpet made from pure natural wool.
The Woolsafe Academy provides ten training modules looking at different aspects of carpet care, covering natural fibres, as one would expect, but also synthetic fibres, and different colouring methods. “I can understand the need for the Woolsafe Academy modules,” said a spokesperson from Anyclean, a London-based cleaning company that specialises in carpet cleaning, among other services. “You don’t clean an ethnic rug made from natural dyes and natural fibres in the same way as you would clean a cheap rug made from synthetic fibres or a blend of synthetic and natural fibres. It’s just another reason why you need to call in a professional carpet cleaner rather than trying to do it yourself with an expensive rug – you don’t want to spoil something valuable that runs colour if you’re not careful.”
The Woolsafe Academy is a correspondence-style online training course, with those in the industry being able to study the training modules at a time and pace that suits them and their schedules, rather than being tied down to classroom learning. This method of instruction was selected to suit people who are already working as carpet cleaners and who may not be able to attend “regular” classes.
When asked whether Anyclean carpet cleaners are likely to get Woolsafe Academy training, the Anyclean representative responded, “All of our workers already out there cleaning carpets have gone through our in-house training programme, which is pretty comprehensive and overlaps a great deal with the Woolsafe Academy courses. We wouldn’t let untrained people loose in public with a steam cleaning machine and not knowing what they’re doing. But we think the Woolsafe Academy programme and modules are a good idea. And if we decide to use their modules, the online learning environment is an advantage, as they’re over in the USA and we’re here in London.”
