(Newswire.net — April 3, 2013) Tempe, AZ — Just over one year ago on Thursday, March 15, 2012, the Tempe Fire Department made a first alarm response to the My Big Fat Greek Restaurant located in downtown Tempe, at 525 S. Mill Avenue.
A grease fire initiated in the kitchen’s ductwork, followed by flames and gushing, black smoke, as witnessed by nearby ASU students and other onlookers. Although the fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured, the restaurant closed and remained under repair for nearly one year following the incident.
Although Tempe locals questioned whether or not the concept would regain popularity after its long closure, restaurant manager Nate Eisler was quoted saying, “We are all very pleased with how fast the restaurant has made a comeback. We weren’t sure what to expect after our grand re-opening, but business has never been better.”
After re-opening its doors on February 5th, the Tempe My Big Fat Greek Restaurant remains a favorite for traditional Greek food and fun among local business employees, students and Mill Avenue shoppers. The Tempe location was the first of fourteen locations that have sprouted up in Arizona, and now, California and Illinois.
The Mitchell Restaurant Group, L.L.C., owner and operator of the Mill Avenue and Paradise Valley locations, has since opened an additional restaurant in Chandler. Ownership continues to focus on providing a fun, Greek atmosphere and plans to spice up the nightlife at its Tempe location by adding a disc jockey and dancing on weekends.
Ironically, the restaurant offers its patrons an impressive fire show each time an order of Saganaki (a flaming cheese dish) is enthusiastically delivered by staff members from kitchen to tableside. Eisler jokes, “We’ve taken every precaution to ensure that the fire stays out of the kitchen and in front of our customers, where it belongs.”
