Teacher Blogs: Why More Teachers Are Blogging Than Ever Before

(Newswire.net – April 9, 2013) Atlanta, GA – An increasing number of teachers are using blogs as a platform to deliver information to students, fellow teachers, and other interested readers.  Blogs offer a way to connect with an audience on a very personal level, and their uses in the field of education are limitless.

The popularity of education blogs can be attributed to the fact that teachers are continually looking for ideas to use in their own classrooms.  Niche blogs exist for just about every school subject, including art and music.  Teachers share lesson plans, original materials, pictures of their classrooms, and even their students’ work.  Connections are formed between educators half a world away, and students reap the rewards.

Some teachers are even able to earn a substantial second income from blogging.  Jessica Sells, a veteran teacher of 10 years, started blogging as a way to make extra money and help other teachers do the same.  Jessica’s blog, The Rich Teacher, discusses and reviews the many different ways teachers can make money online, either through affiliate programs, or by utilizing their own skills and knowledge to create lesson plans, instructional materials, or eBooks.

“I really wanted to create a site to help other teachers like me, who might be struggling to support themselves or their family on a teacher’s salary,” Jessica says.  “I think every teacher should have their own blog.  Whether or not they monetize it is up to them, but it’s a creative outlet and very rewarding.”

The process of setting up a blog is not a difficult one.  Web hosting, through sites such as HostGator, is inexpensive and easy to set up if you wish to host your own domain.  All you need is a clever domain name and some basic computer skills to be up and running within an hour.  Other sites, such as WordPress and Blogger, let you host a fully customizable blog on their domain.

Jessica not only maintains her own blog, but subscribes to several education blogs and uses them on a regular basis.  “I know anytime I’m looking for a new way of presenting a lesson to my students, I first check out teacher blogs for ideas,” says Jessica.  “I think teachers are very giving, and the ability to share information with people around the world through blogging is the ultimate educational tool.”
