JazzTimes critic George Varga writes that Lovano is “long noted as an artist who thinks as hard as he plays, … brainy and brawny, earthy and urbane.” Lovano will be joined by Judi Silvano (voice), James Weidman (piano), Peter Slavov (bass), Jamey Haddad (drums), Otis Brown (drums) and, in honor of Lovano’s 60th birthday, some surprise guests. Judi Silvano, is a singer of many moods, at once strong and strident, then peaceful and poetic. Her voice is fluid, clear and full of champagne highlights. Whether stating a melody of a Theonius Monk tune, a Duke Ellingtion tune or one of her own compositions, she moves thru lyrics with ease and delivers the music with elan. In each ensemble she joins, she can state the melody and deliver the story or sing with the precision of a horn, improvising and extending her harmonic interpretations. No doubt this concert will be energetic, moving and one to remember. (

“Channeling the spirits of Rosemary Clooney and Ella Fitzgerald, Silvano takes her own path,
mining the immense colors and moods of her material.” Down Beat Magazine, Sept. 2012
Jazz music in general, has had a rough time of it, navigating pop music’s domination of radio, TV, and film has not been easy. The new generations have very little access to the music due to cuts in arts funding in schools, closing of record stores, reduced air play on radio etc.
TRI C JAZZ FESTIVAL strives to overcome the ennui and to bring jazz to a wider audience by exposing the new generation to the music in innovative ways and keeping jazz visable by bringing artists of all jazz styles together.
