Singer, Songwriter, Composer and Artist, Judi Silvano will be joining an all star cast of musicians in the “Us 5” band led by Joe Lovano, Tenor Saxophonist. Ms. Silvano is a multi dicipline artist who has been active since her youth in many creative expressions including the fields of music, dance, painting, ceramics, gardening and clothing design. She has shared her enthusiasm and appreciation of the natural world as a performer, producer and educator both nationally and internationally.

Born in Philadelphia and graduating with a degree in both Music and Dance from Temple University, Judi made her way to New York City in 1976 where she launched her career as an improviser — of dance at first, but jazz would not be far behind.

An alchemist of music and movement, her career as a choreographer and dancer led her straight to NYC’s downtown music scene where her improvisational spirit could run free. It also steered her toward what would become a long-term collaboration with saxophonist Joe Lovano that began in 1980 and continues to this day. Throughout the ’80s, you could also find Judi on any given Monday night at the Village Vanguard where the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra held forth, soaking in the great charts of Thad Jones. Before long, Judi could sing along with all the lead trumpet parts. You can trace the roots of her unique horn-like approach to vocalizing directly to this experience as well as having grown up listening to older brother Dan’s trombone playing and listening habits.

To date, Judi Silvano has 10 recordings to her credit, including 1997′s “Vocalise” on the Blue Note label and a landmark duo recording with Billie Holiday’s last accompanist, the great pianist Mal Waldron, “Riding A Zephyr”, released in 2002 on Soul Note Records. She’s led multiple vocal groups from Voices of Juniper to Voices Together, won numerous awards and grants (Meet the Composer and New York State Council on the Arts two times), been named one of the Top 10 Vocalists in Downbeat magazine 4 times and has contributed as a jazz journalist to All About Jazz & Jazz Improv Magazine for several years.

Her latest recording “Indigo Moods”, released on Jazzed Media Records in April 2012, shows Silvano able to synthesize her years of singing favored jazz repertoire with her playful sense of improvising! The result is a relaxed and easy-going Trio session with her trusted collaborators on this project, Peter Tomlinson on piano and Fred Jacobs on trumpet. Together they create fresh interpretations of her choice of well-known and timeless songs! The repertoire runs from Duke Ellington, to Antonio Carlos Jobim along with the Gershwin brothers, Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin and more.

“The joy of singing is an essential ingredient to vocal music-making and this joy comes through in every note that Judi Silvano sings.”  Diane Reeves

Judi Silvano is an artist for all seasons and seeks to communicate the beauty and connections of the indomitable human spirit. Her ability to express her view of the world in various mediums allows her to speak to many points of view and bring people together through music. This concert will feature Joe Lovano’s brother, Anthony Lovano and Carl Lovano, Mr. Lovano’s uncle, plus Jamey Haddad, Ernie Krivda, Kenny Davis, Carmen Castaldi, Jeff Anastasia, Val Kent and other surprise guests.  The TRI C Jazz Festival this year will be a two week event bringing together jazz musicians from every shade of jazz, traditional, smooth, nu jazz and more. Nationally known artists Natalie Cole and Dr. John as well as emerging artists will also be featured.
