Will Liberals Green Light Northern Gateway Pipeline?

(Newswire.net —  May 15, 2013) Calgary, AB — Nothing is ever written in stone, which was obvious yesterday with Christy Clark’s Liberals surprising victory over Adrian Dix and the NDP in B.C. With that victory come questions that are of interest to oil and gas producers. One of the key questions involves B.C.’s stance on the pipeline issue.

While a Liberal victory may appear to be good news to oil and gas producers because of Ms. Clark’s desire to grow the economy. She still has to deal with the anti-pipeline sentiment that is rampant across the province.

The Globe and Mail did an article on this and explained that Ms. Clark, “She has set what she says is five immovable conditions in order for heavy oil to be transported across the province – including a focus on First Nations consultation and treaty rights, world-leading marine oil-spill prevention, and that B.C. receive “its fair share of the fiscal and economic benefits” of any project.”

From those words it can be assumed that it is going to be a battle. There will be guidelines lines that have to be met before any pipelines are constructed through this beautiful province.

The Globe and Mail reported the perspective from Robert Roach of the Canada West Foundation, “From an oil-producing perspective, there is more room to manoeuvre with the Clark government than a Dix government.”

Robert Kwan of RBC Dominion explained “While the NDP winning would have resulted in outright opposition to Northern Gateway and the Trans Mountain expansion, the Liberals’ commentary has not been particularly supportive.”

According to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) vice-president Janet Annesley, the oil and gas industry, “will work constructively with the government elected to continue delivering energy and economic benefits to B.C. while protecting the B.C. environment.”

This sounds promising however many questions remain unanswered at this point such as how will fracking affect the landscape? Many scientists are concerned with fracking because it has been shown to cause earthquakes. Could the profitability of the pipeline cause more damage than it is worth?

Do you think the pipeline is good for the B.C. economy? Will it bring jobs and resources to enhance the lives of British Columbians?
