(Newswire.net – May 16, 2013) Cincinnati, OH — New Star Trek movie, Into Darkness, reminds us all why we love the franchise so much. The movie showcases the friendship between Kirk and Spock, brings back our favorite cast members weaving a story that only a true trekkie can appreciate.
I saw this movie during the opening midnight showing, here in the U.S., and the place was packed with Star Trek character look-a-likes. Excitement filled the room as the movie started and never died during the entire showing. When the movie was over everyone cheered and clapped.
Critics may have torn the movie apart giving it barely an approval rating but the movies aren’t made for the critics, they are made for the fans and they loved it.
Star Trek Into Darkness is the second film featuring the young cast of the original characters. Chris Pine (Jim Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) gave an outstanding performance that captured the essence of the relationship between the commander and his first officer.
The film opened Wednesday night of this week and has already brought in $3.3 million in sales. The movie however is expected to bring in over $100 million in the next 4 days which is $25 million more than the previous movie’s opening week.
The film opened in 7 markets overseas and pulled in $31.7 million in sales its opening week setting a weekend franchise record in each market.
There hasn’t been a Star Trek series on TV for 8 years even though the box office reflects there is still a large audience who loves the franchise. Currently there is a petition at Netflix to bring back the series Star Trek Enterprise for a fifth season, which starred Scott Bakula, as Captain Jonathan Archer.
Bryan Fuller and Bryan Singer are both hopeful that Star Trek Into Darkness brings in new fans and shows there is still an audience out there so they can create a new series, but they are not the only ones interested in such a thing.
Michael Dorn who played Worf on the Next Generation is also looking to reprise his signature role with a spinoff, tentatively titled Star Trek: Captain Worf.
“I had come up with the idea because I love [Worf] and I think he’s a character that hasn’t been fully developed and hasn’t been fully realized. Once I started thinking about it, it became obvious to me that I wanted to at least put it out there, which I have, and the response has been pretty amazing. We’ve been contacted by different individuals–I can’t say who and all that–about wanting to come on board and be part of this. ” said Dorn.
It is clear there are still plenty of fans out there who still love Star Trek and maybe in time we will see another TV series.
