(Newswire.net — May 17, 2013) West Haven, CT — There has been talk of a new High School in West Haven circulating around the city since 2009,but for a few reasons, most notably the poor economy , the project was nothing more than talk. Fast forward to today and right now the City Council has approved to pay its share for the new High School and things are moving forward.
There are 5 key players which make up the team who are responsible for the new high school.
- The West Haven High School Building Committee
- An Owners Representative
- A Commissioning Agent
- An Architect
- A Construction Management Firm
The building Committee who’s elected Chairman, a local business owner and builder Ken Carney of Baybrook Remodelers Inc tells me they have hired an architect, Antinozzi & Associates of Bridgeport , an owners rep CREC, a commissioning agent SBS and are in the process of interviewing a construction management firm.
The project consists of 3 phases. Phase one must start before June 7th to meet a state deadline to begin in order to receive the state funding of 75% ($82 million) of the total cost. The remaining 25% ($28.9 million) of the expected $109 million project cost will have to be funded by the city of West Haven.
When I asked Carney about his sense of the project starting on schedule, he said “We are positioned to start the project before June 7th to secure the State Grant.”
Ken Carney has served on the West Haven Building Oversight Committee since 2005 and was appointed to the West Haven High School Building Committee in 2009. I asked Ken, with being an owner of a busy remodeling company, like Baybrook Remodelers is, why do you volunteer your time to the City of West Haven? His response, “I grew up in West Haven and I benefitted from the school system. It’s great to give back. I also have learned a great deal about new products and building techniques which have benefitted my own business.
He also talked about a side effect of being on the committee which was not expect “In my involvement on many different projects for the city I have gained knowledge which I know has help me be a better builder and has contributed to me giving my customers a better end result to their projects.”
Carney also talked about why he feels the new high school will benefit the community. “The high school serves its residents and is the soul of the community. The citizens of West Haven will benefit greatly from this project.” With the June 7th deadline approaching I’m sure it’s an extra busy time for Carney and the West Haven High School Building Committee, but in the end it looks like West Haven will get it’s State of the Art High School which will benefit it’s future high school attendees.
