(Newswire.net — May 20, 2013) Ramat Beit Shemesh, Jerusalem, IL — Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (April 5, 1902 – June 12, 1994 NS), known as the Lubavitcher Rebbe or among his closer chassidim (followers) just as “the Rebbe”, was a prominent Hasidic rabbi who was the seventh and last Rebbe (Hasidic leader) of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. He was fifth in a direct paternal line to the third Chabad-Lubavitch Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneersohn. In January 1951, a year after the passing of his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, he assumed the leadership of the Lubavitch movement, commonly known as CHABAD. He led the movement until his death in 1994, greatly expanding its worldwide activities and founding a worldwide network of institutions to spread traditional Judaism among the Jewish people, and moral values of justice and honesty among all mankind.
The Rebbe led the movement until his death in 1994, greatly expanding its worldwide activities and founding a worldwide network of institutions to spread traditional Judaism among the Jewish people, and moral values of justice and honesty among all mankind. These institutions include schools, kindergartens, synagogues and Chabad Houses. He successfully built a network of more than 3,600 institutions in over 70 countries and 1000 cities around the world
A Chabad house is a centre for disseminating Traditional Judaism by the Chabad movement. Chabad Houses are run by the local Shliach (emissary), who was sent to that place by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who founded all Chabad Houses. In the Chabad houses, the Shaliach and Shalucha (rabbi and his wife) host programs, activities, and services for the local Jewish community and for tourists.
These centers exist today around the world, and serve as Jewish community centers that provide educational and outreach activities serving the needs of the entire Jewish community, regardless of degree of observance. Each center aims to provide a cozy and informal place to learn about and observe Judaism, and provides an atmosphere such that all Jews feel comfortable at Chabad events. Some are in or very near college campuses, others are not.
Chabad houses are typically run by a Chabad Rabbi and Rebbetzin, often with the assistance of unmarried Chabad young men or women, or, in the case of more developed Chabad houses, with the assistance of a second or even third married couple.
