Subscription Based Websites Thriving in 2013

( — May 23, 2013) Austin, TX — The online subscription industry is thriving; and domestic sales are estimated to be around $18.2 billion annually, up substantially from 2009 estimated sales of $10.8 billion, according to the online research firm Subscription Site Insider.

Subscription sites allow users to consume content on demand, and by charging a membership fee, these businesses do not usually subject users to advertising, making them a popular destination for content consumers who are weary of today’s increasingly invasive advertising.

“Subscription sites like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime offer entertainment that is competing with traditional channels such a television. But niche self help and how-to subscription sites are also growing significantly,” says founder Eric Turnnessen.

And while large media outlets capture up a large portion of subscription site revenue, Turnnessen is seeing some of his customers reach million dollar revenues with his firm’s WordPress membership plugin, MemberMouse, which helps individuals and small businesses cash-in on the subscription-based website trend.

“Subscription businesses are a very tried-and-true business model, and the Internet allows content producers to develop very targeted niches. If you have an expertise, or know someone who does, you can easily create a membership website with valuable content that helps people to achieve their goals or learn a new skill, such as yoga or cooking,” says Turnnessen.

It’s estimated that subscription revenue will surpass $20 billion annually in 2014, with big players such as YouTube adding paid subscription channels to their own platforms.
