What is Well Completion?

(Newswire.net — May 29, 2013) Calgary, AB — Many who are thinking of a future in the oil and gas industry may wonder, what is well completion? After equipment is brought in to down hole drill, the resulting well is tested and evaluated for production. Many tests and evaluation procedures confirm whether or not completion of the hole is warranted. If the well yields positive results completion services will begin.

Well completion service operations prepare the well for production after it has been proven to be a viable source of oil or gas. Well completion services involve casing and cementing the hole. First production casing is run by a well completions team.

After production casing has been run, cemented and attached to the surface and intermediate casing string at the wellhead, these casings form a closed or cased hole. At this point the completed hole is sealed off from the surrounding soils and natural fluids such as groundwater. However, more is involved with well completion than simply running production casing and sealing the hole.

After the initial steps of the well completion process perforation may be performed. Perforation requires the production casing to be blasted at the bottom. Perforating equipment such as a tool called a perforating gun is lowered into the well-bore to blast holes through the casing string, cement and into the reservoir.

After perforation the zone is stimulated so the hydrocarbons can flow more freely. Sand control may be required. Sometimes the zone has to be gravel packed to stop sand production. Finally the well is equipped with tubing, packers and a Christmas tree to control the flow of fluids to the surface.

To reduce expenses, the large drilling rig will be replaced with a smaller completion rig. Some wells will need to be swabbed to increase flow. Swabbing forces the reservoir to be more productive. By comparing the new well with others in the area the flow can be evaluated. If it is still not producing to the proper degree it can be chemically or physically treated to try to improve flow.
