Of her jazz workshops and masterclasses Ms. Silvano says “Listening is a very large part of how to understand the enormous diversity of style and expression available to us.  My experience as a Classical Singer allows me to share with students the importance of Listening, not only to ourselves, but to others around us.  My workshop will give you inspiration and awareness to reach for something special “in the moment” and tools to connect with the many elements necessary to bring music to life in your own uniquely creative manner.  The goal is to make music from your inner spirit in the most Naturally Expressive way that you can.”

Judi Silvano moved from Philadelphia to NYC in 1976 to be part of the Loft scene as an improvising dancer and singer. She was soon making waves with her daring horn-like vocal lines, improvisational skills and extended compositions and signed with Blue Note Records, releasing the widely acclaimed “Vocalise”, her second of ten recordings as Leader. “Indigo Moods”, released in 2012, features her love of well-crafted songs interpreted with her unique sensibility.

Silvano has toured and recorded with jazz greats Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow, George Garzone, Bill Frisell, Michael Abene, John Lindberg, Gerry Hemingway, Ingrid Jensen, Victor Lewis, Larry Goldings, Mal Waldron and Bobby Few among others in the US and Europe.

As a jazz composer, she has written over 40 works for voice, piano, woodwinds, harp, string quartet, dance scores, A Capella vocal groups, jazz ensembles and Big Band. Also known as a jazz singer/songwriter she has recorded many of her songs on the JSL Record Label. Awarded 3 Grants from Meet the Composer and NY State Council on the Arts, Silvano has been voted Top Ten Jazz Vocalist in Down Beat Magazine Reader’s Poll 4 times. In 2012, two of her Chamber Music compositions to original poetry were featured in concert at NYC’s Symphony Space. Silvano premiered four new Poetry and New Music Works at the “Spoken Word Festival” in NYC’s The Stone with veteran improvisers Ratzo B. Harris and Warren Smith.

As an educator, Silvano taught Voice, Jazz Voice Lessons, Voice Training, Jazz Workshops and Jazz Improvisation at Rutgers University for 10 years, music at the Newburgh Performing Arts Academy for 6 years and lead International Vocal Master Classes called “Freeing the Voice” at major universities such as Manhattan School of Music, The New School, University of Vermont, Jerusalem’s Hassadna Conservatory and Jazz Summer Workshops at Banff International Center, Stanford University, Lake Placid Institute, Janice Borla’s Jazz Camp, the Vallekilde Workshop in Denmark and in Xalapa, Mexico.
