Cynthia Holiday brings her smooth style of jazz and blues to Harlem on June 22, 2013. A former dancer, with a bright warm smile and an inviting style, Holiday’s repertoire includes songs from the Great American Songbook, blues, contemporary material, a few originals and ballads.
Known for her rich contralto voice and stunning stage presence, Holiday breathes life into every song she sings, whether an up tempo swing or poignant ballad. An international singer, she recently completed a tour in Russia with Mr. Oleg Butman, bandleader and drummer. Packed houses in Moscow and a performance in Stavropol City at the Stavropol Philharmonic were highlights of the tour.
When asked, “How do you describe your music?” Holiday replies, “I am a jazz and blues singer, however, I prefer to call myself a “song stylist” because my repertoire includes all genres, sung in the style of jazz music. I am also the band leader of The Cynthia Holiday Quartet with Radam Schwartz, my musical director of 15 years, playing B3 organ and piano.”
Ms. Holiday’s CD, “All The Way” with the Cedar Walton Trio, is available on her website. Growing up in Newark, NJ in a musical family, Ms. Holiday has a deep and heartfelt history with jazz. Her step father, Calvin Hughes, played with Frank Foster, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Clark Terry, toured with “Big Maybelle” and was a big band leader. Steeped in tradition, Cynthia Holiday carries the flame.
According to Sheila Anderson, late night host on WBGO Newark, NJ, “You will find humor, melancholy and joy interchanged with love songs in a Cynthia Holiday set. My Little Rainbow, recorded with the Cedar Walton Trio on Ms. Holiday’s CD ” All The Way”, is a stand out”.
“I met Cynthia several years ago when I used to frequent various jam sessions in Harlem clubs. I was struck by her ability to command the stage. Holiday has a fantastic stage presence and it’s time for her music to be heard”. Kevin Mahogany, Grammy Award Winner/Juno Award Winner, Jazz Singer/Educator
