(Newswire.net — July 4,2013) Darien, CT — Dr.Brian McKay warns weekend warriors of the perils of neglecting a good stretch before and after exercising. The goal is to avoid muscle tears that sideline any athelete of any caliber. Yet the more you tell people the more they forget to stretch.

Happy Birthday America! Today as you read the paper or Kindle take a minute and think about your favorite activity. Chances are you are planning on a little tennis or golf on this extra day off of work. Stop and really think.

Even though you have been playing sports your whole life you still need to stretch. In fact you need to stretch even more. Your muscles are getting shorter as the days get longer. The aging process probably does not help either. Just because you were a college jock does not mean you get a pass on stretching.

Far too many weekend warriors lose their entire season to a muscle tear. It seems that the achilles is more often the spot picked most often to tear. It has to do with us sitting far too long and much too often. The muscles that help keep us standing suffer. Blood flow is impnged and the muscles tighten.

Fast forward to the weekend and out they go to have some fun and exercise. They are doing the right thing by exercising right? Yes of course exercise is great but it requires a modicum of common sense. You would not think about taking a long road trip without checking your oil and tire pressure. It makes sense.

Mostly we are seeing a large increase in cases of Achilles Heel Strain and Plantar Fasciitis on Mondays after too much exercising and not enough warming up over the weekend.

So all athletes please pay a little extra attention to your aging body this Fourth of July. A few minutes of stretching can help you make it to Labor Day in tact and pain free. If not watch the video provided.
