(Newswire.net – July 07 2013) Chicago, IL –  This year marks the 30th anniversary of “Trading Places”, which is probably the best movie ever made about commodity trading. Starring in the movie were Eddy Murphy, Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis. All commodity and futures traders should watch this movie.

Commodity trading began in Medieval Europe with traders called the Pied Poudres (Men Of Dusty Feet) who would go from town to town trading commodities. Commodity exchanges can now be found around the world. Futures contracts are traded on commodity exchanges like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Here is basically how it works for the farmer and the producer. A wheat farmer can sell a future contract on his wheat, which will not be harvested for several months and guarantee the price he will be paid when he delivers; a bread producer buys the contract now and guarantees the price will not go up when it is delivered. This protects the wheat farmer from price drops and the wheat buyer from price rises.

Commodity traders are a very brave lot and trade a very volatile and high risk market where fortunes are made and lost every year. These traders play a very important role by adding liquidity to the marketplace. It is not a place for the timid investor who does not have risk capital that they can afford to lose.

Traders are attracted to commodity trading due to many factors including the thrill of trading, the opportunity for profits and the huge leverage it offers. Speculators can trade a variety of contracts including; Live Cattle, Lean Hogs, Corn, Soybeans, Wheat, Gold, Silver, Copper, Crude Oil, RBOB, Natural Gas, British Pound, Canadian Dollar, Euro FX, T Bonds, SP 500, Dow, and the Nasdaq 100.
