Renovation Reality Shows blown away by House Demolitions

(Newswire.net — 11th, July, 2013) Sydney, AU — Australian TV sets have been flooded with renovation reality shows over the past decade, with shows such as The Block, The Renovators, and Renovation Rescue some of the most popular with viewers. It’s a love affair that looks set to continue, with a raft of new versions set to be spawned in the not too distant future.

The long running success of this genre is fuelled by the public’s strong desire for the digital product, but the renovation reality fanaticism has also spread to the real world, with countless thousands of couples getting off the couch and giving house renovating a try.

The Housing Industry Association’s econometric modelling found massive increases in consumer spending on renovations every time a renovation realty series was aired, proving that it inspires the Australian public to commence renovating their investment properties.

But there is also a dark side to the home renovation fad, especially in Sydney, with many couples pumping their life savings into restoring a home, and then being unable to sell it. This was evident during a recent series of The Block filmed in Richmond, where three out of the four homes featured failed to sell at auction.

Nick Chong-Sun, General Manager of Sydney House Demolition, echoed that sentiment: “Renovating reality shows can be a dangerous trap. They give the viewer the false impression that can spend $1,000 on tools and materials and in 2 weeks they can make an old property ready to be re-sold at a massive profit”.

In fact, according to Mr. Chong-Sun, it makes more financial sense for these property developing entrepreneurs to demolish and rebuild the homes instead. “The other problem with reality renovation shows is that they focus on cosmetic fixes, whereas many homes have severe structural issues, and if they don’t, then DIY renovations are likely to cause them.”

Companies like Sydney House Demolition are seeing an increase in customers from this segment of the market, where they have initially attempted home renovations themselves on investment properties and expected to make a quick buck, and later found they didn’t have either the time or skills to undertake the necessary work.

Renovating versus Demolishing is a time old debate, but at this stage the demolishing side is proving to be the clear leader. The increased participation and demand has pushed renovation costs through the roof, with it generally being cheaper to order a house demolition job and rebuild a new modern home from scratch.

The superior resale value of a new home is another factor which is worthy of consideration, and one that should put the renovation versus demolition to bed. With the public now moving away from the renovation reality fad and pursuing the home demolition option more fervently, we can only wonder how long it will be before the television executives hatch a new demolition reality show.
