(Newswire.net– – August 19th, 2013) Denver, CO –This year’s World’s Strongest Man Competition 2013 is officially underway in Sanya, China. Thirty competitors will compete in qualifying events through August 20th. The top 10 competitors will then battle it out in the finals on Friday, August 23rd and Saturday, August 24th for the prestigious title of The World’s Strongest Man.

Notable names and leading contenders in this years WSM 2013 competition include 2011 winner Brian Shaw from Colorado.  Also competing are two past winners from Lithuania, Žydr?nas Savickas and Vytautas Lalas. Other top names include Laurence Shahlaei, Hafthor Julius Bjørnson, and stalwart Terry Hollands from the UK. It goes to show that iron sharpens iron – Brian Shaw’s strongman training partner, Michael Burke, who recently won America’s Strongest Man, was also invited to China and is hoping to make the finals.

To get ready for this competition competitors have to train using unique equipment and once the competition begins they must be able to handle diverse conditions, delays, injuries and nail on-the-fly strategy decisions while lifting weights that they may have never even attempted before. If a competitor falls out of routine or miscalls a weight it could cost him the entire competition.

Strongman training has become more mainstream. Amateur strongman competitions are now being seen at local CrossFit boxes and neighborhood gyms. Brian Shaw knows that better than anyone and armed with that knowledge he has opened a strongman training program, aptly named StrongmanAcademy.com.

Shaw is looking to return to world championship form after back-to-back surgeries stemming from a torn biceps tendon at the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2012.

Shaw won the World’s Strongest Man Competition back in 2011 as well as the Arnold Strongman Classic in that same year. In fact, he won every contest he entered in 2011. Brian broke his own world record during the Atlas Stone challenge with a 540 lb. atlas stone load at the 2013 Arnold Strongman Classic. He most recently won the Arnold Strongman Classic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
