Local Web Expert Wade Cockfield said now more then ever it is important to ask the right questions before employing a new web designer.

“In an un-regulated industry is important to get the right advice and shop around,” said Mr Cockfield.

“Over my 7 years in the industry I have heard so many horror stories from business owners either dealing with incompetent developers or being simply ripped off by slippery sales people,” he said.

“They’re often promised the world but the company never delivers.”

“Unfortunately many business owners simply aren’t educated to ask the right questions and therefore expose themselves to undue risk.”

“There are some key questions to ask before committing to a web project, and asking these questions could save you thousands in the long run.”

“Asking these questions will also give you the best chance of succeeding online”

Mr Cockfield recommended that business owners start by asking six simple questions which will give them insight to the ability of the company and they value of the project, including:

            •          How long have you been in business?

            •          Can you show an example of your work?

            •          How to you plan to get my website found under competitive search phrases?

            •          What happens if you go bust ?

            •          What technology will you use to build my website?

            •          Is this technology proprietary?

            •          Do I own my website?

“After they ask these questions they should shop around and make the decisions on sound logic”

“In all cases I would avoid signing up on the first meeting,”

“You can easily spot an inflated project by the salespersons willingness to get things signed up at the first meeting”

“Websites can be very intricate so for projects where the quote is more then five thousand dollars, it makes sense to get more then one quotation.”

“One of the real key things to know is if you do decide to purchase a website, that you then actually own it completley – If the company uses proprietary technology then you don’t”
