A pallet is a flat transport structure that supports materials in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift, front loader, or other jacking device. A pallet is the structural foundation of a unit load which allows handling and storage efficiencies. Many materials or shipping containers are often placed on a pallet secured with strapping, stretch wrap, or shrink wrap and shipped to their unloading destination.

Standard pallets are used for loading and unloading. Businesses using these versus those that do not can have much lower costs for handling and storage not to mention the fact that there is faster material movement by loading a pallet.  A couple of examples for the understanding of how pallets are used in businesses are: small items such as jewelry versus larger items such as cars.   The distributors of costume jewelry normally use pallets in their warehouses while car manufacturers use pallets to move components and spare parts.

Pallets for the most part, are wooden, but they can also be made of plastic, metal, and paper.  There are also softwood and hardwood pallets.  Softwood pallets are often considered expendable, and are discarded as trash at the end of their destination.  These types of pallets need to be lifted from two sides.  On the other hand, hardwood block pallets, plastic pallets, and metal pallets are slightly more complex and can be lifted from all four sides. These costlier pallets can be reused and are generally returned to the sender. Many of the pallets lifted from four sides are color-coded according to the loads they can bear along with other attributes.

There are many advantages to wooden pallets.  Not only are they eco-friendly, but they are also inexpensive, easily repaired, and can be recycled into mulch, poster board, and paper. Older ones made from wood can also be used to construct new pallets, depending upon the condition of the material. Unlike pallets made of plastic, if wooden pallets break, repairs can be made to restore them for use. Many wooden models are made with various boards. These boards can be removed, if broken, and replaced individually.
