(Newswire.net — October 20, 2013) Denver, Colorado — Ruslan Provodnikov, nicknamed the “Siberian Rocky,” beat American Mike Alvardo to win the world championship title on October 20, 2013 in Denver, Colorado. Provodnikov won with a technical knockout after the tenth round. Provodnikov came out strong and landed punches while defending Alvarado’s uppercuts. The boxers exchanged punches in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) fight and stayed fairly even until Provodnikov knocked Alvarado down twice in the eight round. Alvarado did not bounce back, and seemed badly injured. In the tenth round, the referee called the fight on a technical knockout.
29 year old Provodnikov was a top ranked junior welterweight division and previously fought 24 times since 2006. He has lost only two fights, winning 15 by knockout. Alvarado, 33, has fought 35 fights professionally. He won all but one and 23 were won by knockout. This was the first time Alvarado defended his title. In an interview before the fight, Provodnikov indicated he would turn the fight into a brawl and beat Alvarado, whose record was just as impressive. After the fight, Provodnikov returned to his hotel and received a huge cheer from his Russian fans and entourage upon his arrival. Provodnikov was smiling, posing for pictures with fans and signing autographs.
