(Newswire.net — October 25, 2013) Seattle, WA — The national General Education Development (GED) Exam is undergoing a major change at the end of this year.
The GED program is a way for individuals who were not awarded a high school diploma to earn the equivalent of a high school diploma by taking and successfully passing the GED exam. Many of the people who fall into this category are individuals who either had to leave high school early or who were involved with home schooling.
The GED exam is a test that takes about eight hours to complete. It is made up of five different topic sections — Reading, Math, Social Studies, Science and Writing. Test-takers need to successfully pass each of the five sections in order to be awarded their GED.
The current rules of the GED exam allow individuals who have taken and passed some of the five sections to come back at a later date and attempt to successfully pass the sections they did not pass on their initial attempt(s). But this rule is changing on December 31.
A brand new test is being introduced on January 1, 2014. This change in the test mandates that all partially completed exams will be discarded. Any test-taker who had successfully passed some of the five sections will need to start the entire process over.
Judy Ford, editor of GED Programs, explained that most individuals do not pass the entire exam on their first attempt. “While some test-takers pass all five sections of the exam on their first try,” Ford said, “Many of them fail to pass one or more of the parts, especially with the Math and Writing sections.”
“Up until this change,” Ford continued, “Students could come back and attempt to complete the sections they had not passed before, but this change in the test will require that anyone who was only partially done will have to start the process all over again.”
The GED exam is offered periodically at various locations around the country. There is typically a fee for taking the exam, but the fee varies by location.
“The GED test is not easy,” concluded Ford, “But it is a challenge that most people can accomplish if they take some time to find out about what types of questions will be on the exam and they prepare for it. Earning your GED is important and it’s worth working for.”
