Cobi Narita, producer and founder of “The Jazz Center of New York” and Mr. Frank Owens, host an “Open Mic” every friday night at Zebs in Chelsea in NYC from 6:30 to 9:30pm. Ms. Narita is known for tirelessly promoting jazz and jazz musicians since the late 60’s in New York. Her “Universal Jazz Coalition” was a major force an exposing young singers and musicians to the icons of jazz during the 70’s and 80’s. Mr. Owens has extensive experience on Broadway, as Musical Director for the stars as well as TV and recording.

Cobi Narita (www.cobinarita.com) continues to nurture and support the jazz community at Zebs with this series. In conjunction with Mr. Paul Ash, Chairman of the board of Sam Ash Music, and Saul Rubin, guitarist/producer, this open mic is a genuine New York experience. Narita says “This open mic is for singers, tap dancers, instrumentalists and poets. Frank Owens is one of the most gifted pianists you will ever hear and our open mic is one of the best open mics happening in New York and elsewhere. As a participant or as an audience member, you will always have an amazing time, one you will never forget….Don’t miss!”

New York City is the jazz capital of the world and as such, hold the unique distinction of blossoming the talents of many aspiring singers and instrumentalists. Although the financial blows of 9/11 and the debacle over the economic meltdown of 2008, put a damper on the night club/restaurant business, artists, supporters of artists and producers have managed to navigate the dark waters of the meltdown with surprising flexibility. While many clubs that provide entertainment as well as food and drink still hold forth, when you enter the doors, expect the possibility of a hefty cover charge and minimum.

If you are an aspiring vocalist, instrumentalist or dancer, you can spend quite a bit of money heading out to hear and see your favorite performers. Along with spending money on your lessons, perhaps a vocal coach, a self produced CD and a video, you need to get experience performing in front of a live audience with a sensitive, musically literate pianist.  Let me tell you, you have found a home at a cozy, 2nd floor loftspace called Zebs, and the fee to enter is 10 bucks, a New York bargain that simply cannot be compared.

Frank Owens has been musical director for Lena Horne, Johnny Mathis, Chubby Checker, Melba Moore, Connie Francis, John Denver, Irene Cara, Lesley Gore, Freda Payne, Ruth Brown, Ann Duquesnay, Petula Clark and many other famous and not so famous singers. Every friday night the jam session and open mic at Zebs gives listeners a chance to see a talent blooming and talent a chance to hone the craft. All ages are welcome, bring your sheet music, have your song totally memorized, count off the tempo and have a go, Frank Owens will be there to support and shape your performance with perfection. Instrumentalists are encouraged to participate.

Zebs is very low key, comfortable and non intimidating for the performer and the listener. There is no bar, no cash register and no waitresses scurrying around distracting you from either performing or listening. It is the ideal place to perform or listen. Most friday evenings Ms. Narita is in the house enjoying and encouraging the performances. With an easy to get location and an affordable price tag, Zebs is the place to be.
